Joyeux anniversaire, Saint Seiya !

We are celebrating Saint Seiya's 30th anniversary today, on december 3 2015 (well, it is december 3 in Japan now) ! Yes, it's the right date !!
Saint Seiya began at a difficult time for Masami Kurumada. He had had many hits previously, such as "Sukeban Arashi", "Ring ni Kakero" or "Fuma no Kojiro", but his latest manga to date, "Otokozaka" was a failure and had been canceled after 6 months of publication. It was a story of delinquents that Masami Kurumada held dear, since it was what he wanted to draw when he became a mangaka. But he put aside his regrets and decided that his next manga would be designed to be hit, made to be popular. Masami Kurumada spent months searching about Greek mythology and constellations, and Saint Seiya was born.
Here you can find more details on the genesis of Saint Seiya (in french):
http://www.saintseiyapedia.com/wiki/Cosmo_Special/Masami_KurumadaSaint Seiya's first chapter was published in the Shukan Shonen Jump 1+2 of 1986 (released on December 3, 1985) and began to harness a modest popularity. What Masami Kurumada was unaware of was that since the beginning of the manga, Toei Doga (Toei Animation's name back then) and Bandai had an eye on it. Toei Doga and TV Asahi were looking for an anime able to counter the concurrent program Nihon Mukashibanashi at golden time, and Bandai was suffering from the decrease of interest in mecha anime and related products, on top of a growing rivalry from the home video game system market. They needed a new kind of toy, and taht's why the came to support unusually early the idea of an animated adaptation of Saint Seiya, although the manga had barely begun. The offer was made to Masami Kurumada in June 1986 (source:
http://www.saintseiyapedia.com/wiki/Interviews/Pegasus_Box/Explications), when the manga was showing the fights between the Bronze Saints and Black Saint in Mount Fuji . The TV series debuted in October 11, 1986, and you know how it went then, as well as the incredible hit it became.
Happy Birthday, Saint Seiya!
